The Beagles From Arkansas

It began with an e-mail.  Did I know about the beagles taken from a Class B dealer in Arkansas ?  Could we help ?  This was followed by a phone call from Ms. Caroline Dowell, one of the greatest beagle lovers of all time.  Caroline had heard from her friend, Dr. Elizabeth Pannill (with USDA) that they were having problems getting a commitment on the beagles.  More phone calls, more emails and all of a sudden we had committed to all but those already spoken for by individuals or those needing to stay on with the local vet because of the severity of their medical problems.  BREW mid-west agreed to take a few as did Hokies Hounds in Baton Rouge.  So in short order, 3 were on their way to the mid west and 35 were headed here.  Were we prepared for this ?  No way ! But with a lot of work and some help we're getting better organized everyday.
I want to take a minute right here to thank some special people. (I'm not going to thank all of the donors here because I'd forget someone but thank you cards are on the way and we'll be adding you to our angels page.)  Ms. Caroline Dowell who has loaned us pens and runs.  Lab Rescue of Houston, German Shepherd Rescue and many individuals for the loan of runs, x-pens, bowls, crates etc.  Dr. Elizabeth Pannill of the USDA for her help and information.  Dr. Joe Flanagan of the Houston Zoo for giving vaccines.  Mr. Charlie Currer of the USDA who volunteered to help and did.  Ms. Allison Hardman who always works so hard for the beagles.   She fosters, drives hundreds of miles for them and loves them so much.    Ms. Elaine Wright who is such help to us by fostering 7 beagles at a time and getting them in to the vet and by being their socializer.  Ms. Carolina Ossa who helps ALL of the time in more ways than can be counted.  Mary and Dave who spent the better part of 2 days out here doing anything they were asked to do.  Gary and Cindy Peterson of Hokies Hounds who followed through exactly like they said they would by taking 8 of the beagles from the group sent to us.   Bob Coffey who has worked putting up shelter, runs, fences, pens, lights until he's ready to drop.  My husband is the best !
The beagles arrived on a Saturday morning
about 7:30 by truck.  A picture had to be made of me receiving each one. (government rules).

Each had to be logged in and accounted for.  The unloading took over 3 hours.

The beagles were escorted to the back where Dr. Flanagan assisted by Charlie (USDA) gave them their vaccines.

Meanwhile, Bob continued building a 20 x 25 foot cover for the runs and pens.

We got the sweeties into pens and runs with food and water and began to try to get to know them a little bit.

Many were quite shy. One little girl is missing half of one ear and 2 are missing the ends of their tails.  Several were very undernourished including one tiny girl who we thought we might lose.
